The “Let's Talk Business Series”, a 12-part program connecting entrepreneurs with federal, state, and local small business resources.

Whether you're a budding entrepreneur or want to grow your business, this series presents essential business topics, provides a forum for networking, and promotes success in today’s dynamic business environment. Participants may attend one, two, six, or all sessions. Session 5 – The Employer Policy Handbook & Skills for Success: Human resources is a critical component of employee well-being in any business, no matter how small. HR responsibilities include payroll, benefits, hiring, firing, and staying up to date with state and federal laws.

This session, presented by Texas Workforce Solutions-Cameron, will teach participants the importance of creating an employee handbook and the basic legal issues employers face when hiring. In addition, Texas State Technical College will provide information on the Skills for Success Grant through the Texas Workforce Commission. Discover and Learn: The importance of creating an employee policy handbook and what it entails How to protect your business from potential lawsuits, such as wrongful termination How unemployment issues can affect your business: eligibility, claims, and the appeals process Simple mistakes that are easily avoidable: Top ten tips for employers Additionally, you will learn: The Skills for Success (SFS) Program can help employers by funding workforce training in essential skills such as communication, organization, teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking, digital literacy, conflict resolution, and time management.
